#GIANTSTARS: Liam Sumner

The prospect of Jeremy Cameron, Jonathon Patton and Tom Boyd lining up in the same forward line has plenty of people excited, including GIANTS small forward Liam Sumner.

Patton joined full training today for the first time this pre-season after a knee injury cruelled his 2013 season.

Patton’s recovery sees him join 2013 All-Australian Jeremy Cameron and number one draft pick Tom Boyd in the GIANTS’ forward line.

And while there’s plenty of height for the GIANTS up forward, the 178cm Sumner said he’ll be there to snap up any crumbs that fall his way.

“They’re three monsters,” Sumner said. “It will be exciting to watch them play and see how they all work together.”

Sumner, pick 10 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, has had an injury-plagued first two years at the club but is back training after ankle surgery at the end of last season.

“I had a slow start because I had ankle surgery but I’ve been getting my rehab done and just joined the main group now, just trying to get a kick,” he said.

Sumner has his sights set on topping the eight games he managed in 2013 and helping the GIANTS rise up the ladder.

“We want to win, that’s what we’re working towards,” Sumner said.

“We want to get the games and the wins on the board so we can hopefully start looking at finals in a few years’ time.”

Sumner said he’ll have some competition come Round 1 – just 50 days away – with number two draft pick Josh Kelly tearing up the training track.

“He’s come out there, just smashing the three k’s, his running ability is crazy,” Sumner said.

“His skills – left, right foot, doesn’t matter – he’s just been smashing it out on the track, finding the ball really well.

“I can see Josh Kelly playing either Round 1 or 2 and ‘Boydy’ will be out there straight away because he’s a big, tall, strong forward.”

While on-field Sumner may not have had everything go his way, off-field he is relishing the Sydney lifestyle.

“(I’m) loving it up here, trying to get out in the surf a bit. I’ve got my girlfriend living up here now so loving life.”
