On the eve of the club’s 2014 premiership season, Essendon supporters have been handed great news with David Zaharakis agreeing to a new three year deal.

One of Essendon’s most exciting midfielders, David will remain a vital part of the Bombers engine room until the end of the 2017 season.

The 24-year-old told Bomber TV he was thrilled his future at the True Value Solar Centre was secured for the next four years.

“I’m proud to play for this great football club, I’ve supported the Bombers since I was a young boy so to re-sign for a further three years, I couldn’t be happier,” Zaharakis said.

“All parties were keen to settle my contract before Round 1 and I’m looking forward to the season starting on Friday night and hopefully helping the team win our first four points of the season.

“As a playing group we’re extremely excited about the progress we’ve made over the pre-season and if we continue to demand high standards from one another, I believe we have a really exciting future ahead of us.”

Senior coach Mark Thompson believes David is poised to play a pivotal role for the Bombers this season.

“Players like Zacka are the future of our football club, and to have him re-sign for the next three years is exciting for the playing group and for our fans,” Thompson said.

“I’ve been really pleased with the way Zacka has prepared for this season, he has been a leader on the training track, he’s been consistent during our practice matches and I hope he can carry his form into the season.

“He’s an extremely driven young man, he’s a smart footballer and the most pleasing aspect is he still has his best football ahead of him.”

The 2011 Crichton Medalist and 2013 ANZAC Day Medalist is set to bring up game 100 in season 2014.

Heading into his sixth season with the Bombers, David has played 87 games and kicked 73 goals. He was the club’s second round selection, number 23 overall, in the 2008 national draft.
